SEGMENT 1: TYPES OF SENTENCES


Q1. What is a sentence?

Ans1. A sentence is a group of words that makes a complete sense. E.g. Roma studies in New Life Public School.


 Q2. What are the types of sentences?

Ans2. There are four types of sentences. They are:

a) Assertive sentence     E.g. Rabbits like to eat carrot.

b) Imperative sentence   E.g. Stand up.

c) Interrogative sentence   E.g. Where are you going?

d) Exclamatory sentence   E.g. What a beautiful picture!


Exercise 1 

Write A for Assertive, E for Exclamatory, I for Imperative and Q for Interrogative.

1) The Sun is a star.

SEGMENT 2: SUBJECT AND PREDICATE


Q1. What are the parts of speech?

Ans1. There are eight parts of speech. They are:

1) Noun 2) Pronoun           3) Adjective         4) Verb

5) Adverb 6) Preposition 7) Conjunction     8) Interjection


Q2. What is the subject of the sentence?

Ans2. The part of the sentence about which something is said in the sentence is called the subject of the sentence.

E.g. The children of School City Education are very efficient.


Q3. What is the predicate of the sentence?

Ans3. The part of the sentence that says something about the subject is called the predicate of the sentence.

E.g. Anil speaks not only English but also Hindi.


Exercise 1 

Separate subject and predicate in the following sentences.

SEGMENT 3: COMPREHENSION – SPEECH & ESSAY


MY INDEPENDENCE DAY SPEECH

A very good morning to respected teachers and my dear friends; Today we are here to celebrate the Independence Day of our country. First of all I wish you all a very great Independence Day. We all know that India became a free country on 15th August 1947. I would like to utilize this opportunity to salute our great freedom fighters. Great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Subhash Chandra Bose did great service to India. Independence Day is a great occasion to unite the people of India. It is also an occasion to dedicate ourselves to the service of our nation. Once again I wish you all a great Independence Day. Jai Hind, Jai Bharat.


ESSAY ON ROAD SAFETY

Road safety is very necessary while being on the road.  Everyone should learn the road traffic and safety rules at a very early age. Traffic rules are very necessary to avoid accidents on the road.  Following are the road safety rules.

We should always use the left side of the road. Drivers should be in slow speed while bending or turning on the roads. Take extra precaution while going on the over-crowded roads and road junctions. While riding a motorcycle we must wear helmet. Speeds of the vehicles should be within the speed limit and slow especially in the areas of school, hospital, colony, etc.

SEGMENT 4: TYPES OF NOUNS 

1) What are proper nouns?

Ans: Particular names given to persons, places, roads, mountains oceans, rivers etc are called proper nouns. E.g.  Orai, India, Yamuna


2) What are common nouns?

Ans: The words which are used as general names for people animals, places or things are called pronouns.  

E.g.  cobbler, teacher, cat


3) What are collective nouns?

Ans: The names of the groups of people, things or animals are called collective nouns.  

E.g.  team, flock, bunch.


Exercise 4.1 

Underline proper nouns in the following sentences.

1. Sania Mirza is a great tennis player

2. The Indian Ocean is a big Ocean. 

3. Mount Everest is the highest peak in the world.

4. Nile is the longest river in Africa. 

5. New Delhi is the capital of India.

SEGMENT 5: NOUNS

Q1. What are countable nouns?

Ans1. Countable nouns are the names of things which we can count. E.g. apples, houses, cows

 

Q2. What are uncountable nouns?

Ans2. Uncountable nouns are the names of things which we cannot count. E.g. milk, water, sugar


Q3. What are compound nouns?

Ans3. Compound nouns are the nouns formed by joining two words. E.g. chess board, football court, dining room

In the following sentences, decide whether the noun that is underlined is countable or uncountable. Write C for countable, and U for uncountable in the space given against the sentence.

SMART CITY

A smart city is an urban area that uses different types of electronic data collection sensors to supply information. This information is used to manage assets and resources efficiently. 

A smart city is clean, green, high-tech. It has all the advanced features. In a smart city everything is digital. Street lights, garbage disposal system and emergency services depend on digital functioning. 

Smart cities do not become smart on their own. The people living in a city convert an ordinary city into a smart city. Seoul, Vienna, Boston and Tokyo are the examples of smart cities in the world.

SEGMENT 7 :REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS Q1. What are reflexive pronouns? Ans1. Reflexive pronouns are words which refer back to the subject of the sentence. E.g. I believe in myself. Q2. How are reflexive pronouns formed? Ans2. There are nine reflexive pronouns in English language. They are formed in the following ways. I-myself, We-ourselves, You-yourself [singular], You-yourselves [plural], He-himself, She-herself, It-itself, One-oneself and They-themselves. Exercise 7.1: Underline the subjects and the corresponding reflexive pronouns in the following sentences. E.g. Radha and Roma blamed themselves for the loss.. 1. Reshma introduced herself in the assembly. 2. You made fun of yourself. 3. We must insure ourselves against accidents. 4. The children can’t look after themselves. 5. One has to believe in oneself. Exercise 7.2: Underline the subject and write the corresponding reflexive pronoun in the following sentences. E.g. The man laughed at himself. 1. SEGMENT 8: NOUNS – ABSTRACT & CONCRETE Q1. What is an abstract noun? Ans1; A noun denoting an idea, quality or state rather than a concrete object is called an abstract noun. E.g.: truth, danger, happiness. Q1. What is a concrete noun? Ans1; A noun denoting a material object rather than an abstract idea, quality or state is called a concrete noun. E.g.: dog, building, tree. Exercise 8.1: Write A for abstract, and C for concrete in the space given against the sentence. 1. Anil eats an apple every day. ……….. 2. SEGMENT 9: COMPREHENSION – SPEECH & ESSAY MY REPUBLIC DAY SPEECH A very good morning/ to respected teachers/ and my dear friends./ Today/ we are here /to celebrate the ……. Republic Day/ of our country./ First of all/ I wish you all/ a very great Republic Day. We celebrate Republic Day/ on 26th January every year. On this day in 1950/ India became a Republic. Republic means/ a state ruled by elected leaders. On this day/ a parade takes place/ in the national capital of India./ Republic Day is celebrated/ all over the country. In schools/ children participate in/various programs. 10) Once again/ I wish you all/ a great Republic Day./ Jai Hind,/ Jai Bharat./ ESSAY ON TREES Trees are most valuable and important source of life on the earth. They protect us from many natural disasters and nourish our lives in many ways. They keep our environment clean and earth green. So, we should try our best to protect them. Large and mature trees are more benefiting in nature than smaller ones. They capture more carbon, filter green house gases at high rate and provide big shadow to combat urban heat. So we should not cut them even in emergency.

SEGMENT 10: DEGREES OF ADJECTIVES Q1. What are the degrees of adjectives? Ans1. Adjectives have three degrees. a) Positive, b) Comparative and c) Superlative E.g. tall taller tallest. Q2. How are the degrees of adjectives used? Ans2. We use positive degree when we do not compare things. E.g. Mango is a sweet fruit. We use comparative degree when we compare two things. E.g. Mango is sweeter than apple. We use superlative degree when we compare one thing with all the other things of the same class. E.g. Mango is the sweetest of all the other fruits. SEGMENT 11: SIMPLE TENSES Q1. What are the simple tenses? What are their verb forms? Ans1. There are three simple tenses. a) Simple Present [V1]: E.g. The sun rises in the east. b) Simple Past [V2]: E.g. I went to market yesterday. c) Simple Future [will+V1]: E.g. India will play Australia tomorrow. Q2. How are the simple tenses used? Ans2. a) Simple Present [V1] is mostly used to tell about habitual actions and universal truths. b) Simple Past [V2] is mostly used for a past action with a definite time. c) Simple Future [will+V1] is used for a future action with a definite time. Exercise 11.1: Underline the verb form and write the tense. E.g. I usually take coffee in the morning. Simple Present 1. The child drank the milk in the morning. ………………. 2. January and December are the coldest months of the year. People look forward to the chilly days of winter. Though most people enjoy this season, some face difficulty. We keep ourselves warm by wearing woolen clothes. We drink hot drinks like tea, coffee, and hot chocolate. Winter days are dry, and we have to make extra effort to stay hydrated. Festivities like Christmas and New Year take place during this season. Some parts of India face snowfall during this time of the year.

A note on online classes from the school.
